Weekend Wine Pick for January 21st

 

 

 

Elio Grasso, Dolcetto d'Alba “dei Grassi”, Piedmont Italy 2007

 

What’s in the bottle?

Bright ruby red color with slight purple rim.  The nose offers deep red fruit with a back round of citrus peel and frambois.  The palate is heady for a Dolcetto, telling me that this wine is made in a powerful, forward style and should be consumed in the next few years (2010-2014).  Not very tannic but dry. The wine is rather smooth and round in the mouth with medium body.

Knowledge:   

In the region of Piedmont or Piedmonte (the foot of the mountain) the marquee names are Barolo and Barbaresco.  These wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape and are planted on the highest part of the hillside.  Mid-slope the Piedmontese grow the Barbera grape and at the bottom of the hill they plant Dolcetto (little sweet one).  This is the grape that the Piedmontese are seen drinking in the local Restaurants and Enoteca, as most the expensive and prized Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s are mostly exported.

Service:          

Decant for at least 1 hour prior to drinking and serve in large bowled Burgundy style glasses.

For the Geeks like Me:

Hailing from the Monforte d’Alba commune in Barolo from a small 1.5 hectare parcel about 280 meters above sea level.  The vines are planted on southeast-facing slopes on relatively loose-packed calcareous soil.  The vines were planted between 1970 and 1980 with the average age of productive vines being 30 years. Made from 100% estate grown grapes with an average annual output of 7,000 bottles.
